The world at your desktop
Article Abstract:
Traditional online services such as CompuServe, which offer a range of services through their own networks, and usually access to the Internet too, are now facing strong competition from newer service providers. However, the two sides are uniting against the growing number of internet service providers, which are proving an even stronger force. There are now almost 200 such providers in the UK, and the market is set to become increasingly fragmented as rising PC sales boost demand for access to cyberspace by more than 10% a year.

Gadgets and gizmos for the new year
Article Abstract:
There were many technological developments in 1995 in areas including telecommunications and television broadcasting. The pace of development is likely to slow down in 1996 as these innovations are consolidated. Most new products will be upgrades of existing technology, rather than completely new. Key areas will include the high-density CD disc, digital broadcasting and providing Internet access through the television set.
