Chmn-designate of British Airways Sir Colin Marshall sees the airline industry merging into a few super-carriers. Chmn of British Midland Sir Michael Bishop is working on European expansion from Heathrow. Air UK managing director Andrew Gray intends to consolidate its position as the biggest operator at Stansted. Under chief exec Sir John Egan BAA became a more customer-driven business.

BA faces summer of discontent

British Airways (BA) suffers industrial unrest in May 1993 because of its strategy of moving short-haul European operations out of Gatwick into a new company, European Operations Gatwick (EOG) with pay rates 30% below others. BA lost about 60 million pounds sterling in the financial year 1992/3 when it took on 450 Dan-Air pilots in EOG. The first three of 10 BA routes, to Copenhagen, Malaga and Frankfurt transferred to EOG on May 01, 1993 without union agreement.

The man who would be King

Sir Colin Marshall, 59, became chairman of British Airways while his predecessor, Lord King became life president in July 1992. He was born in Edgware, Middlesex and left school in 1951 to work for the Orient Steam Navigation Company as a cadet purser. He then spent 21 years in the car hire industry with Hertzs and Avis and worked in the US for many years. his experience is in man management and financial control of a service business.
