Oh Lordy! It's...Viz at 20

Article Abstract:

Viz, the most popular adult comic in the UK, is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary. It started on a very small scale, with the first print run being only 150 copies. It was produced on a very casual basis, and was sold on the streets. However, certain outlets soon began to stock it, and by 1984 sales had reached up to 5,000 copies of each issue. Viz became a regular publication in Aug 1985, and from then on was widely available. It now sells 300,000 copies, but has still retained strong links with its modest origins.

More than a pretty face

Article Abstract:

Esquire magazine's decision to no longer feature scantily clad women on its cover was not intended to be a criticism of this common approach among men's magazines. Instead, it was an attempt to ensure that the magazine's cover more accurately reflects its contents. Internal changes have also been made to ensure that the more upmarket image presented by the magazine's cover is followed through inside the magazine. It is now time to introduce a magazine with a broadsheet approach into the men's magazine sector.

New Lad takes on the New World

Article Abstract:

Men's lifestyle magazines are becoming increasingly popular in the US at a time when their image is waning in the UK. The US version of Maxim magazine has been particularly influential, with its guaranteed circulation rising to 950,000, from 175,000. It seems likely that the men's lifestyle magazine sector will expand in the US, especially if Emap goes ahead with plans to launch FHM, the fourth-largest English magazine in the world, and IPC launches Loaded.
