One step closer to sainthood
Article Abstract:
On Sunday May 17 1992 the Pope will conduct a ceremony of beatification of Monsignor Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer, founder of Opus Dei, the conservative Catholic group, in St Peter's Square. Escriva founded the group in Spain in 1928. Its 75,000 members practice personal religious conservatism. The Pope bestowed upon Opus Dei the title of a Personal Prelature in 1982 and appointed member Joaquin Navarro-Valls as head of the Vatican Press Office. Over 1000 bishops and 69 cardinals support the cause. Sainthood can be pronounced after veneration, beatification and production of further miracles.

Britain refuses to join clamour against Chirac
Article Abstract:
The UK government is very keen to remain on good terms with the French government, headed by Jacques Chirac, and has therefore not joined other countries in condemning the latest French nuclear test. This has brought it into conflict with New Zealand and Australia, and is likely to cause tension at the forthcoming Commonwealth Summit. The UK government has emphasised that France remains committed to a full test ban treaty when its last test has been undertaken.

A broad vision darkened by politics
Article Abstract:
Foreign secretary Douglas Hurd, who has recently announced his intention to retire, was highly respected by diplomats, as he had extensive Foreign Office experience. However, he was also seen as highly influenced by political developments, and often put the needs of a government in trouble before the principles of foreign affairs. He sought to extend the UK's influence beyond that associated with a medium-sized European power.
