Only a spoilsport could scorn cultural circuses
Article Abstract:
There are now many summer arts festivals held in the UK in a wide range of locations. This shows that the widescale penetration of home-based media such as videos has not turned people away from experiencing the arts at first hand. Indeed, interest in arts festivals appears to be growing, rather than declining. However, it is important that these events are not simply a form of entertainment. They must promote new or difficult work and therefore make a significant contribution to cultural development.

Unsworth before and after Hannibal
Article Abstract:
Living in Italy can give an English novelist's work a rather formal tone, according to Barry Unsworth, who has recently completed the restoration of a house in Umbria. His most recent work, 'After Hannibal,' is unusual for him in that it has a contemporary setting and deals with contemporary issues. It has been widely seen as a sort of travel book, but in fact deals with serious matters. His earlier works have been mainly historical novels with foreign settings.
