Out of the madness, music
Article Abstract:
Germans have in the past been rather sceptical about 'Degenerate Music,' which was written by composers who fell victim to Nazi oppression, according to record producer Michael Haas. However, this view has been changed by the work of Berthold Goldschmidt, and Braunfels' 'Die Vogel' was also well received. Decca is working on a 'Degenerate Music' series, which will include 'Sarlatan,' written by Czech composer Pavel Haas. He died in Auschwitz in Oct 1944 after being part of a creative period at the Terezin ghetto-transit camp near Prague, Czech Republic.

'I am a corrective to the industry.' (conductor Michael Gielen)(Interview)
Article Abstract:
German conductor Michael Gielen is well known in conducting circles, and is respected for his interpretative integrity and his intelligence. He has never become very well known among the general public, as he refuses to make concessions to commercial considerations. He strongly opposes what he sees as the 'industrial' nature of sound recordings currently being produced, and emphasises the importance of clarity and transparency. He is also against compilations of music, regarded them as a reflection of the 'fast-food' culture.

Slow but sure
Article Abstract:
Composers tend to become interested in a different scale of sound as they become older, according to Giya Kancheli. He has composed seven symphonies, but has recently been focusing on music for chamber and string orchestras. However, he feels that in both his symphonic works and his chamber music he is attempting to deal with the same problems of silence and space. His current music, which has wide musical vistas and echoes of folk songs, has proved extremely popular.
