Article Abstract:
The number of public houses in the U.K. has fallen from 68,000 in 1989 to 66,000 in 1995. The fall is mostly attributed to changes in drinking habits. The U.K. Beer Orders of 1992, which required large breweries to divest half of their outlets, resulted in a period of consolidation within the industry and, surprisingly, led to an increase in the number of smaller, independent operators. An analysis of the U.K. public house industry is presented.
