Oxford's poets fall foul of the bottom line
Article Abstract:
There have been very strong reactions to the decision by the Oxford University Press, the publishing house owned by Oxford University, England, to cancel its poetry list, thus leaving 26 poets without a publisher. Representatives from the Oxford University Press have stated that this was a necessary move for financial reasons, as the poetry list was hardly covering its costs. However, some observers have expressed outrage at the fact that the university appears to be putting financial considerations before supporting poets.

Reed this and weep
Article Abstract:
Reed Elsevier, which has a very strong presence in legal, business and scientific publishing, is experiencing considerable difficulties. It has issued its second profit warning in six months, and has been unable to find a new chief executive. It has taken time to integrate legal publishing businesses Shepards and Matthew Bender, and competitors have been able to damage Reed Elsevier while it is vulnerable by reducing their prices. However, there are now indications that the company will see improved fortunes in the future.

Reed calls off 18bn pounds sterling link-up with Wolters
Article Abstract:
Tough conditions imposed by European competition authorities have prompted Anglo-Dutch publishing concern Reed Elsevier to abandon plans for an 18 million pounds sterling merger with Dutch concern Wolters Kluwer. The deal would have created the largest professional and scientific publishing operation in the world, with total profits of 1.2 billion pounds sterling on sales of 5 billion pounds sterling. Experts believe that Reed will now focus on building up its business through smaller acquisitions.
