Packer closes in on rival's golden assets
Article Abstract:
There is growing speculation about whether Kerry Packer is coming close to fulfilling his ambition of gaining control of John Fairfax Holdings, the most influential newspaper group in Australia. Packer has been prevented from owning newspapers because he owns commercial television network Channel Nine. However, significant changes have taken place at John Fairfax recently, with indications that Brierley Investments, which has held a 24% stake in John Fairfax since late 1996, has lost control of the company. It seems that Packer may now have begun to gain a foothold in John Fairfax.

Bought and told: the other price war
Article Abstract:
UK newspapers have become willing to pay extremely large sums of money to secure exclusive interviews with people who have received a great deal of media attention. All newspapers now have an executive in charge of obtaining these stories, which are known as buy-ups. The amount of money offered will be higher if the person concerned is attractive and is prepared to disclose very personal information. A double-page story with good pictures will cost a newspaper around 20,000 pounds sterling.
