Voters are too insecure to feel good
Article Abstract:
The UK is in a strong position economically, and has now closed a large part of the gap with its international competitors. Despite this, voters still feel very insecure, and they seem set to reject the Conservative party at the forthcoming general election, even though this party has been responsible for the country's economic recovery. Unemployment has fallen substantially, but many people still face job insecurity, even at relatively high management levels. For this reason, they do not feel able to re-elect the Conservatives.

At the end of the chapter
Article Abstract:
It is very likely that 1997 will prove to be a turning point in the UK's political history. The Labour party seems to have abandoned traditional socialist principles, while the Conservative party has lost most of its fervour for European integration. If the Labour party wins the forthcoming general election, then it will be the first time that a strong economy has not helped the existing government. Familiar political landmarks are disappearing, and nothing has yet emerged to replace them.

The careless way in which ministers destroy freedom
Article Abstract:
The UK government does not appear to give a very high priority to issues of personal freedom. However, judicial review is becoming a significant force against restrictions on personal freedom. The government is also being placed under pressure by lobby groups and by the media. An opposition party coming into office is usually sensitive to issues of personal freedom, but can quickly begin to overlook people's rights, even if it does not deliberately adopt anti-libertarian policies.
