Papua PM forced to resign as arm leader wins their battle of wits
Article Abstract:
The reputation of the army of Papua New Guinea and that of its leader, Brigadier General Jerry Singirok, is set to improve considerably following its success in forcing the resignation of prime minister Sir Julius Chan, deputy prime minister Chris Haiveta and defence minister Mathias Ijape. This follows controversy about the employment of mercenaries to deal with the long-standing conflict on the island of Bougainville. Soldiers felt considerable frustration with the government, and Singirok was able to use this to bring about the departure of Chan.

Tutsis armed by South Africa
Article Abstract:
Zaire's mainly Tutsi rebels, who are fighting the Rwandan Hutus, are being supplied with weapons through former and existing members of the South African services, according to recent reports. The United Nations is now to undertake an investigation into the activities to Ters Ehlers, a former personal assistant to the former S African state president PW Botha. He is claimed to be managing one of the operations to supply the Tutsi rebels, benefiting from his links with South African industry and the armed forces.
