Parents accused as their baby lay dying
Article Abstract:
A Birmingham couple were cleared of child abuse in Jun 1992 following an inquest which found that their 5 month old baby died of the muscle-destroying disease polymyositis. Doctors had believed that the baby Emma Attwood was suffering from non-accidental suffocation Munchausen by Proxy or 'gentle battering' when she died in Feb 1992. Emma had had 6 previous attacks and had been treated for epilepsy, whooping cough and bronchiolitis. The manner in which the couple and their 2 other children were treated by the police is under investigation.

One pair sheep's horns. Destination unknown
Article Abstract:
The Parcel Recovery Centre (Parc) in Manchester, England attempts to trace addresses for parcels which become unwrapped or are poorly labelled. Parcelforce deals with about 180 million parcels a year, about 250,000 of which arrive at Parc. At Christmas an extra 5 million parcels are posted. Many parcels marked 'return to sender' cannot be delivered as there is no information about the sender. Staff use telephone directories, manufacturers' catalogues and reference books to trace senders.

The battle of the little and big horns
Article Abstract:
Nimbus Records transfer operatic 78s to CD with a wind-up gramophone and a hi-tech Ambisonic digital microphone in front of the horn to reverse the method of original reproduction. Norman White, musical consultant, produces the 'Prima Voce' label. For records after 1925, when electric microphones were used, a new horn, the Mark 3, has been produced which has a frequency response reaching 60 hertz. White searches out the best pressings available, as British pressings were noisier.
