Going private - the US experience
Article Abstract:
There has been rapid growth in the privatization of publicly funded schools in the US, and educational management companies are now expecting their first profits. The largest educational management company is the Edison Project, which by autumn 1998 will have 48 schools with 23,000 students under its control. It reports that there is very strong demand for its services, with school districts and citizens groups being keen to take a new approach to education. However, the educational advantages of privatizing schools remain unclear.

Excuse me - but are you good enough to teach us?
Article Abstract:
Applicants for teaching jobs at Hessle High School near Hull, England, are interviewed by a small group of the school's pupils as part of the selection process. The school's governors have come to recognize that the pupils are very good at identifying potential teachers' strengths and weaknesses. Pupils welcome the fact that their views are taken seriously, and applicants also recognize that pupils can play a positive role in the selection process.
