Pay, not a skeleton, keeps top men out of public jobs
Article Abstract:
The fear of having secrets from their private lives unearthed by the media does not deter people from applying for top civil service posts, according to senior recruitment specialists. Pay levels are in fact the only factor which makes it hard to fill top public positions, as pay in the civil service is still lower than that which can be obtained in the private sector. There are no known cases in which someone has rejected a public sector job because of concern about media attention.

Passing the buck carried on until an innocent man died
Article Abstract:
Paranoid schizophrenic Christopher Allajah Clunis, born May 18 1963, killed Jonathan Zito at Finsbury Park station, London, England, on Dec 17, 1992. Police sought a psychiatrist to examine him, but several hospitals refused to accept responsibility. A locum consultant psychiatrist from Friern Barnet hospital, Dr Taylor, agreed to see him as she was the key worker supervising his case. She had not met him before. The lack of hospital care led to this random killing.

A new set of rules for the media game
Article Abstract:
The UK government plans to introduce legislation which will establish the first integrated media market in Europe. Media companies will benefit from a less strict regulatory regime, making their investment decisions on the basis of financial considerations rather than on the basis of statutory requirements. This approach is being promoted as deregulation, but is also an attempt to regulate the industry too.
