Is there no justice for women in the legal profession?
Article Abstract:
The number of women solicitors in the UK has risen by 166% since 1988, and just over half of all newly qualified solicitors are now women. However, career progression can still present many challenges for women solicitors, as law remains a male-dominated profession. Only a quarter of women solicitors are partners, compared with 55% of men, and only around three law firms have women managing partners. Women solicitors are often expected to work in areas such as family and employment law, and face great difficulties in more competitive fields such as commercial law.

Legal secretaries - a law unto themselves
Article Abstract:
There is very strong demand for highly skilled legal secretaries in the UK. Salaries are around 2,000 pounds sterling higher than in other professions, with some legal secretaries earning as much as 28,000 pounds sterling. Firms unable to recruit suitable legal secretaries are becoming increasingly willing to train non-legal secretaries, especially if they have experience of working in a partnership. Some firms are prepared to sponsor secretaries who wish to become legal executives, and some secretaries go on to become solicitors.

Block horror!
Article Abstract:
The 145 solicitors' offices in the UK which have been invited by the Legal Aid Board to participate in a two-year research project looking at new options for funding legal aid have reacted very negatively. There is particular concern about the possible block funding of legal aid. Lawyers point out that the costs of disbursement would have to be met from fixed fees for cases, with the Legal Aid Board offering no compensation for the additional administrative work which participation in the research project would create.
