Leaseholders in the UK are joining together to call on the government for legislative reform to prevent landlords and freehold owners of property exploiting tenants. Their demands include the immediate introduction of a national regulator to monitor the property management sector. They are also supporting a tough licensing system for managers, one of the recommendations in the government's consultation documents on leasehold reform. The All Party Parliamentary Group on Leasehold Reform is also calling for a tough statutory regulator.

It's time to make leaseholders feel they're kings of the castle

Article Abstract:

The UK government is beginning to respond to claims by leaseholders that existing legislation allows landlords to take advantage of their tenants. It has issued a consultation document containing a number of proposals designed to increase the power of tenants in relation to their landlord. The proposals include a 'no fault' right for leaseholders to take over the management of their block of flats without purchasing the freehold and regulation of the activities of property managers.
