Pinpoint the panic button

Article Abstract:

There is often no recognizable cause of panic attacks, which are characterized by shaking, sweating and feelings of dizziness and nausea. However, once someone has begun to suffer from these attacks, they may become connected with a specific situation. Experiencing one panic attack is common, but some people develop a panic disorder, which some experts believe is caused by an over-production of chemicals in the brain that are intended to prompt a flight or fight response if there is danger. Researchers are now working on a range of drugs to treat panic disorders, focusing on raising the brain's natural levels of serotonin.

Why men become anoraks

Article Abstract:

There appears to be a link between the traits associated with autism and the traits that make people skilled engineers and scientists. Autism is not connected with being a scientist or an engineer per se, but the skills required for being a good scientist or engineer are the ones that are generally regarded as being typically male. It is possible that the genes for autism are carried on the X sex chromosome, of which girls have two and boys only one. Normal girls who carry their father's X chromosome may also have a protective factor on that chromosome which helps to protect them from developing autism.

(C5H5)2Fe meets Macbeth

Article Abstract:

Artists and chemists clearly use different forms of language, but this may be the only real difference between the arts and the sciences. In fact, chemists and artists have much in common. In both the arts and the sciences, there is a joy in creating something new. The chemist can 'see' beauty in symbols, and this can be equated to abstract art. There is a cathartic experience involved in creation and appreciation, and this is present in both the arts and the sciences.
