Lichens can give scientists very important information about changes in air quality, as they are extremely sensitive to air pollution. Researchers have now developed maps of lichen locations, and in this way have established the regions with the highest levels of air pollution. They are also looking at ways in which pollution can cause lichens to damage the structures on which they grow.
