Plenty to grouse about
Article Abstract:
Hen harriers and peregrines play a key role in reducing grouse numbers in the UK, according to the Langholm Report into the predation of raptors on grouse. There are a number of views about how pressure on grouse can be lifted without killing raptors. One solution may be for gamekeepers to provide hawks with other food when they are rearing chicks and most likely to prey on grouse. The Game Conservancy Trust believes that it may be viable to even out the harrier population by removing eggs from nests in areas where populations are already large and introducing birds onto moors where there are currently no harriers.

Beauty and the beasts
Article Abstract:
The decision to enclose almost 1,000 ha of coastal land on the Ardtornish estate in the Western Highlands of Scotland has attracted considerable controversy. The land is being enclosed to protect it from deer, thus allowing old woods along the shore to regenerate and spread inland. The scheme will cost more than 300,000 pounds sterling and almost certainly involve the massacre of several hundred deer. It is hoped that the fencing will be removed once the woods have become reestablished, thus giving the deer access to a much richer environment.

The problem with Reynard
Article Abstract:
Hunting currently kills 20,000 foxes a year, and some observers believe that there would be a dangerous explosion in the fox population if fox hunting were banned. Others believe that fox populations would actually fall if hunting were banned, as killing foxes only encourages higher breeding levels. It is thought that there are currently 240,000 adult foxes in England, Scotland and Wales in Winter, with around 425,000 cubs being born in spring.
