It's out there: the art we love and hate
Article Abstract:
Many people believe that large sculptures such as the angel planned by sculptor Anthony Gormley beside the A1 at Gateshead serve no useful purpose and are simply a waste of public money. Such structures have always attracted mixed reactions, but have generally gone on to become regarded quite fondly. This has been the case, for example, with the Eiffel Tower and the statue of Christ in Rio.

Behind the barricades
Article Abstract:
The new town hall in the Hartcliffe area of Bristol, England, resembles a fortress or a prison from the outside. This follows experiences elsewhere in the city, where public buildings are frequently attacked. Local schoolchildren were involved in its design, and it has so far remained almost free from vandalism. Inside, it is warm, colourful and welcoming.
