Poor A-levels? Try teaching
Article Abstract:
There is considerable variation in standards between the UK's teacher training institutions. These institutions differ both in the quality of the students they recruit and in the proportion of students subsequently taking up a career in teaching. There are also varying standards between school-based teacher training schemes. Overall, it is clear that men and members of ethnic minorities are under-represented among students at teacher training institutions. The highest standards are generally found at the older universities.

Once again, small schools hold secrets of success
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that the UK's smaller primary schools generally perform better than their larger counterparts. However, the future of small schools remains uncertain, even though the government has stated that it is committed to village schools unless there are very strong arguments in favour of closing them. Mixed views have been expressed about the reasons for the success of smaller schools. Social class may be one explanation, but very small class sizes could also be a significant factor.

Tables and tests good, targets bad
Article Abstract:
