Pop star's cocaine tale changes French view of the world
Article Abstract:
There have been mixed reactions in France to an interview in Le Monde, normally a very serious newspaper, with rock star Johnny Hallyday, especially to his admission to taking cocaine. Some observers believe that he should be prosecuted under France's strict drugs laws, while others point out that cocaine is widely used by French television personalities, journalists, writers, actors and lawyers. The decriminalization of drugs has attracted considerable debate in France recently, but attention has mainly focused on soft drugs, such as cannabis.

Will the Gaullists deal with the Devil?
Article Abstract:
The French centre-right is coming under growing pressure to consider reaching a deal with the National Front, headed by Jean-Marie Le Pen, following local and regional elections to take place on Mar 15, 1998. Leaders of centre-right parties have so far resisted this pressure, claiming that the National Front has acted immorally. However, this issue is set to become extremely destructive in French party politics. The rise of Bruno Megret, second-in-command in the National Front, will be a particularly important factor.
