Yes, minister, but where's the cash?
Article Abstract:
Universities must start to play a key role in producing well-educated young people who have the skills which are required to fuel the UK's economic growth, according to the government's review of higher education. It is generally accepted that the higher education sector needs to expand, but this is hampered by the lack of resources. The government may choose to introduce a system of privatised student loans, or may follow the Australian system, under which loans are paid back through income tax and national insurance.

Why top dons are the business
Article Abstract:
Colleges and universities in the UK are showing signs of increasing commercialism, and some observers believe that this is daming traditional university life and accountability. However, universities claim that they are being forced to enter the commercial world in order to obtain funding. Some now receive only a small part of their income from funding council grants and home fees, and in 1992-93 the private sector invested more than 160 million pounds sterling in the 'old' universities alone.

Universities or battery farms?
Article Abstract:
There are clear signs that the university system in the UK is collapsing under the pressure of a significant increase in student numbers and cuts in the amount of funding. In new universities in particular, staff are concerned that teaching is now no more than 'battery farming,' with some having student-staff ratios much higher than the average. Staff are now reporting unacceptable staff and very heavy workloads.
