Potted history
Article Abstract:
The UK National Trust takes on eight students each year on its three-year training programmes for gardeners. Of these, six are aged under 20. Each student is based in a specific garden, where a wide range of experience can be gained. The students must also study for 10 weeks at Bicton College in Devon, England, where the National Trust runs courses designed to specifically address the work its gardeners may be required to undertake. The National Trust is keen for private owners to play a role in offering placements for trainee gardeners.

Deck the halls with amaryllis
Article Abstract:
It is possible to make very attractive Christmas decorations from natural materials. Both ivy and holly are needed to form a basis, although it is much easier to work with ivy than with holly. When the foliage is firmly attached to the basis of the decoration, which could be made from chicken wire or Oasis, many different items can be used to add interest. These include fir cones, rose hips, walnuts and willow. Candles can also be an attractive feature.

I had a little bay tree ...
Article Abstract:
Bay trees can sometimes grow very rapidly, and can reach a size which makes them hard to keep under control. In this situation, it is necessary to undertake extensive pruning, perhaps changing the tree's shape altogether in order to make it more manageable in future. Removing the top part of the tree will make it look bare for a time, but it will tolerate hard pruning and soon recover. Pruning should be undertaken between August and October.
