The first decision to be made when purchasing a computer is whether to choose a Windows type computer, a Macintosh or a games machine. A Windows PC can sometimes seem to be rather slow, but has the advantage of being able to use a very wide range of software. A Macintosh is very easy to use, but can use only a limited range of software. A dedicated games machine is the best choice if the user only wants to play games. Before purchasing, it is vital to check serving and warranty terms.

The decision by Intel to launch the MMX chip, an add-on for the extremely successful Pentium processor, immediately after Christmas 1996, has created considerable controversy. Many people invested in a computer just before Christmas, and they are likely to be very annoyed to learn that their new equipment is already outdated technology. Furthermore, software which will make full use of MMX's multimedia capabilities will not be available until late spring 1997.
