Prejudice, policing and the future of Ulster
Article Abstract:
A considerable number of Northern Ireland's Unionists believe that planned reform of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) will lead to it losing power just as paramilitary prisoners are being released. In loyalist areas, some people believe that released prisoners will actually be serving in the RUC. Concern about the future of the RUC is encouraging many people to consider voting against the Northern Irish peace agreement in the forthcoming referendum. RUC Chief Constable Ronnie Flanagan has warned against the undermining of the force's operational independence.

However, these changes are being undertaken against a background of fierce determination.

The night defences were laid to waste
Article Abstract:
There has been violent conflict between police and Orange Order supporters in Portadown, Northern Ireland, where barriers erected to prevent the Orange Order marching through the Catholic Garvaghy Road have largely been broken down. Three police offers were injured by blast bombs, while 20 protesters were hurt. This confrontation has caused serious damage to relations between the Royal Ulster Constabulary and the loyalist community.
