Price is right on the edge of town
Article Abstract:
What Everyone Wants discount stores started in Glasgow in 1971 as What Every Woman Wants selling fashion and expanded to a chain of 51 stores in Scotland and northern England by 1992. Mr Phillip Green took over the firm with his Amber Day company in 1990. The shops have no style, economise on space and are self-service. They are located on the edge of towns where rents are lower. Office and operating costs are kept low to permit discount prices of value-for-money goods. Stock now includes menswear and childrens' wear. Interim profits up 18% to 17.84million pounds sterling were announced in 1992.

Wake up Savannah, the world is coming to town
Article Abstract:
John Berendt's book 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil' has served to make the city of Savannah, GA, extremely well known. The number of visitors to the city has doubled since the book was published in 1994, and this trend is set to be boosted by the release of a film version of the book directed by Clint Eastwood. The film has had a significant impact on the lives of some of the city's residents already, as Berendt stipulated when he sold the film rights to the book that all the real people mentioned in it should be allowed to audition for their characters.

We must end this war of town v country
Article Abstract:
The traditional divide between urban and rural life, which has been fiercely protected by politicians and planners in the form of green belts, is becoming increasingly invalid. It is likely that new types of settlement will begin to emerge, and these will have a profound impact on the lives of ordinary people. Indeed, they will be much more significant than developments in information technology, for example. It is now time to acknowledge that the UK needs new ways of living and working.
