Private education: how we can have our cake and eat it
Article Abstract:
There are mixed views in the UK about whether the government really wishes to establish a more egalitarian society. Members of the middle and upper classes who have become accustomed to paying for privileges such as private education are expressing relief that the government is not showing signs of removing this facility. However, the government is in fact very keen to promote social inclusion. This means that the middle and upper classes may be able to retain their privileges, but may have to be willing to share them a little more widely.

Beware the Fossil Tendency flexing its muscles
Article Abstract:
The UK government is aware that it still requires trade union support to put many of its plans into action. However, it is not necessary to be totally cynical about the government's White Paper 'Fairness At Work,' which aims to encourage employers to recognize new work structures within which changes of job are frequently and people wish to make more time for family life. The Labour party is clearly no longer totally reliant on the unions, and Prime Minister Tony Blair does not seem to be constrained by his own pre-election commitments.

Marginalised masses, can it be that your time has come?
Article Abstract:
The launch of the UK government's Social Exclusion Unit could mark the beginning of a genuine social revolution. It may make people aware that social exclusion has more to do with power than with race or poverty. It is important to realize that those who are most socially excluded are not necessarily the poorest in society or those from ethnic minorities. Exclusion comes from an inability to determine your own lifestyle and from thoughtless bureaucracy and prejudice.
