Procrastination could save the day for Eurotunnel
Article Abstract:
The board of Eurotunnel has strongly emphasised that it does not intend to hand over the company's equity to its banks. However, it continues to face considerable difficulties, especially in negotiations with its banking syndicates over debts of 8.1 billion pounds sterling, on which interest has been suspended. These problems are growing as the company moves closer to a formal signing of an agreement with the entire syndicate. It is quite likely that individual banks will demand concessions, and Eurotunnel will therefore be put under great pressure.

Rail privatisation set to put 20,000 jobs on the line
Article Abstract:
Little publicity has been given so far to the fact that as many as 30,000 jobs could be lost as a result of the privatisation of the rail system in the UK. It seems that this issue will not come to the fore until the main privatisations have been completed. The government does not wish to precipitate a clash with the unions, and some observers even claim that government officials have not attempted to predict the possible impact of privatisation on jobs in all areas of the rail system.

Rail fire sale a recipe for tears
Article Abstract:
The UK government is making a serious mistake by allowing political considerations to determine the pace at which British Rail is privatised. It may be true that most passengers will not be worse off as a result of privatisation, but those who use routes which pass through more than one franchise area will face poorer services, as operating a divided network will prove extremely complicated. Creating 25 operating companies is bound to bring extensive disruption to services.
