Computer tracking could end beef ban
Article Abstract:
The introduction of a GB 35mn computerised cattle tracking system could end the worldwide export ban on British beef. The Government said this should reassure that the nation's beef is BSE free. The hope is that European Union politicians and vets would also agree that British beef is safe. The system will be active from 28 September and include compulsory tagging and the storing of the animal's medical history. The system will only affect cattle born after 28 September and will become a major food safety contributor. A similar system has been operating in Ireland for ten years.

Drink-drive limit to be one pint of beer
Article Abstract:
The UK government is set to introduce a reduced limit for drink-driving in autumn 1998. The new limit will reduce the level permitted from 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood to 50 milligrams. This is the equivalent of one pint of beer or two glasses of wine and would bring the UK level into line with other European Union countries. The move will be part of a wider Road Safety Strategy.
