Punching above its weight
Article Abstract:
Punch magazine has moved increasingly towards investigative journalism and away from its traditional humour since it was relaunched in 1996 by Liberty Publishing. It gained considerable media attention for a seven-page report detailing how leading UK banks routinely leave confidential information in bin-bags on the street, rather than shredding it. It also undertook a detailed investigation of the close links between government minister Peter Mandelson and the advertising agency M & C Saatchi. Editor James Steen seems particularly keen to attack Private Eye, which he regards as the main rival to Punch.

Oversexed, overblown and on their way over here
Article Abstract:
Time Warner, the largest media conglomerate in the world, is planning to sell its celebrity weekly magazine People in the UK by summer 1999. It is also widely believed that lifestyle, celebrity and beauty monthly In Style will be sold in Europe. These magazines would compete directly with Now, from IPC, and OK! and Hello!, from Northern & Shell. US publishers are being attracted to the UK because of the growing popularity of celebrity magazines there.

Sleaze hits the high street
Article Abstract:
Youth magazine Sleaze Nation, which has been distributed free to those attending night clubs since Nov 1996, is now to be sold through WH Smith. The club and lifestyle magazine aims to be different from other publications. It has a thickly bound book format, and makes innovative use of visuals and typefaces. It can almost be regarded as an anti-style magazine, according to independent publisher and sole investor John Swinstead.
