Read my lips: I won't give way
Article Abstract:
UK prime minister John Major is determined to continue to take a cautious approach to participation in a European single currency, despite strong pressure from Conservative party rebels to reject a single currency. He has warned that allowing splits within the party to grow larger will simply give greater political advantage to the Labour party. However, there are few indications that his threat of an early election if rebels continue to express their views publicly will be effective.

Major may go to the polls early
Article Abstract:
It has been widely believed until recently that UK prime minister John Major would decide to set May 01, 1997, as the date of the next general election. However, some observers now believe that the prime minister will decide to hold the election at an earlier date, probably between Feb and mid-Apr 1997. The decision may be influenced by the Ulster Unionist party, which is opposed to holding a general election on the same day as local elections in Ireland.

Major refuses to pronounce death of the peace process
Article Abstract:
The Northern Irish peace process will not come to an end as a result of the recent bomb attack in Lisburn, according to UK prime minister John Major. He has emphasised that the people of Northern Ireland wish the peace process to continue, especially after having lived for some time in relative peace. The Conservative party is now likely to be even more firmly resolved to take strong action against terrorism in Northern Ireland.
