De Vere Group is a provincial hotel group, and is therefore not being too badly affected by the slump in international travel following the terrorist attacks in the US, according to Chief Executive Paul Dermody. He believes that there is much potential consolidation in the leisure market, and this is why De Vere is selling the Greens health club chain.

Granada Chmn Gerry Robinson is both respected and feared by those with whom he comes into contact. He has become wealthy through his position at Granada and his roles as BSkyB Chmn and a member of the board of The Savoy. He will also become Arts Council Chmn in May 1998. He has been involved in a number of controversies, and has been ruthless on occasions at Granada. He still maintains close links with Ireland, where he grew up, and intends to return there when he retires.
