Rural factor in 'eyeless babies'
Article Abstract:
Concerns that pesticides may be linked to abnormalities in the foetus have been heightened following the discovery that cases of babies born with no or very small eyes are double in rural areas compared to urban areas. The conditions of anophthalmia and microphthalmia were studied by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, which found 444 cases between 1988 and 1994, amounting to one in 10,000 births. However, the researchers say evidence of any link with pesticides is currently weak, with an infection caught by the mother thought to be the most likely cause.

Software boost for East Coast line
Article Abstract:
Jarvis Rail has awarded AEA Technology a contract to install sophisticated software along its East Coast Mainline. The software is intended to enhance signalling along this part of the UK rail network, allowing controllers to give high-speed passenger trains priority over less rapid freight trains. Under the multi-million pound deal, software will be fitted on Tyneside and at three electronic control hubs at York by end-1998.
