Revealed: 'Kitchen Cabinet' that tries to keep the heat off Major
Article Abstract:
It has been revealed that Chief Whip Richard Ryder chairs a committee of 20 Cabinet ministers, senior civil servants, Conservative party business managers and officials which works to ensure that sensitive political issues are handled appropriately and that government policy is better coordinated and presented. It is the only committee dealing daily with government-wide business, and includes four of the closest advisers to prime minister John Major. Its formation indicates that John Major attaches great importance to party management and presentation.

Major finds clear blue water
Article Abstract:
Prime minister John Major's speech to the 1995 Conservative party conference emphasised the strong differences between the Conservative and Labour parties in areas including education, devolution, tax and crime. It was warmly welcomed, and restored the faith of many party activists in the Conservatives' ability to win the next general election. The Labour party offers only a 'lightweight alternative' to the Conservatives, according to the prime minister.

Portillo to run if Major ousted
Article Abstract:
Michael Portillo has confirmed his willingness to run against John Redwood in a second ballot for the leadership of the Conservative party if John Major is defeated in the first round of voting. John Major is campaigning extremely hard, and has emphasised that he is prepared to stay on as party leader even if he wins by only a small majority. The entry of Michael Portillo into the contest presents John Redwood with a strong challenge.
