Revolution can make the rising sun shine
Article Abstract:
It is wrong to believe that economic problems in Japan do not have any effect on Europe or North America. Japan's economy is still the second-largest in the world after the US on many measures, and Japan is the world's largest creditor country. The economic difficulties encountered by Japan could well emerge in other developed countries in the foreseeable future, and for this reason it is vital to look closely at what is happening in Japan. Developments in Japan indicate that no economic model, however successful it seems, will continue to be successful indefinitely.

Why Hashimoto couldn't get things moving in Japan
Article Abstract:
Ryutaro Hashimoto, who has resigned as Japanese Prime Minister, seemed to differ from his predecessors in that he had a strong personality and appeared determined to make real progress. However, it is now becoming clear that his appearance of determination could have been a camouflage for the inability of the Japanese political system to make structural reforms. His successor will have to take political action to deal with the underlying weaknesses in the country's economy. Strong opposition to reform will be the key factor in bringing about real reform.

Sayonara: the year Japan went west
Article Abstract:
The Japanese economy continues to decline, with no sign of a recovery yet. There is very little indication on the streets of Tokyo, Japan, that the country is in recession. However, ordinary people are very pessimistic about the economy and about Japan's place in the world. It is clear that Japan's economic system, although very successful in the past, is no longer effective. Significant change of some sort will take place, but possibly not until the early years of the 21st century.
