Rich pickings for a chosen few
Article Abstract:
Although IBM is the top seller of personal computers in the UK, it is struggling to regain profitability but Compaq and Apple are doing very well, the former with its ProLinea range and the latter with the Performa range of Macintosh computers. IBM has 17%, Compaq 15% and Apple 11% of UK sales and they are the only organisations with over 10%. IBM has recently announced the biggest ever loss of any company in history. Compaq has increased sales by 63% and Apple has had its first $2 billion quarter. The policy of these two big-name companies to produce cheap computers for the small business and the home that cost little more than their unknown rival's machines has paid dividends.

Apple power restores owners' pride
Article Abstract:
Apple Macintosh developed the portable PowerBook with advanced electronics for quality. The 100 series models are conventional, weigh about 6lb and have a large memory. The 200 series are lightweight, have larger memories and can be connected to a full-size monitor on the desktop. The keyboard is ergonomically designed and the neat case has a shelf for the trackball. Its battery life is longer than average and plenty of warning is given before it runs out. It can be used with most laser printers or needs a printer driver for use with a PC printer.

New chapter opens with a noisy novel
Article Abstract:
Electronic books, complete with realistic sounds and graphics, are available in California, published by Voyager. Voyager use Apple Macintosh Power Book computers and predict the development of even smaller computers with higher resolution screens. The reader can 'turn' to a particular page or chapter and make notes by using the controls. Oxford University Press is publishing smaller reference books electronically and more specialised ones as CD-ROMs. Distribution is through bookshops in the US but mail-order only in the UK.
