Anxieties of influence
Article Abstract:
Walter Benjamin, the German writer, was born in July 1892. His prosperous Jewish family lost their capital in the 20's and he failed in his academic post with the University of Frankfurt, so he became a freelance writer. He committed suicide on Sep 26 1940 rather than be imprisoned by the Gestapo. Since 1955 his work has been greatly admired and influenced the whole artistic world. His work explains the worth of scepticism and some consider it demonstrates Marxist thinking.

Artists on the most-wanted list
Article Abstract:
It has been common throughout history for poets, writers and musicians to be exiled from their native country for expressing views which conflicted with those of the authorities. However, this seems to have happened more frequently in the 20th century than ever before. In certain cases, artists have even deliberately gone into exile. Being forced to leave familiar surroundings inevitably has a significant impact on the artist and his work.
