Riot that turned into a national bloodbath

Article Abstract:

Civil war broke out in Knin, Yugoslavia in Aug 1990. There was no ancient enmity between Serbs and Croats. Devolution would have met most of the demands. The Slovenes and Croatia declared independence on Jun 24, 1991. Federal premier Ante Markovic sent tanks to the border. The Serbian leaders abandoned Slovenia in favour of Croatia. However, EC mediators persuaded the Yugoslav army to leave Slovenia. Conflicts broke out in Bosnia. In Mar 1992 Bosnian president Alija Izetbegovic called a referendum on independence which most Serbs boycotted. The Serbs barricaded Sarajevo.

With a little generosity, we could end the Balkan nightmare

Article Abstract:

There is potential to bring genuine stability to the Balkan region if the West is willing to show generosity and vision. It is possible for this region to shed its long history of conflict, but only if it receives a great deal of Western investment over a long period. Attention must now be given to creating an atmosphere of trust, ensuring that dictatorships can no longer be established in the Balkan region. The Balkan stability pact drawn up by the major powers represents a promising start to this process.
