Rogues' gallery
Article Abstract:
Philip Saunders founded the monthly magazine 'Trace' in 1988 to aid the police and victims of art theft, but it is also used by thieves, handlers and informers. The magazine liaises with international police forces and has enabled over 20 million pounds sterling worth of stolen art to be recovered. Although London is a centre for selling stolen art, Scotland Yard's Art and Antiques Squad consists of only two officers and two civilians. Interpol and the FBI have a database each and The Art Loss Register has another, listing about 20,000 stolen works worth over 1,000 pounds sterling each. 'Trace' has a database of 14,000 items.

The appliance of science
Article Abstract:
Auction houses, museums and owners of paintings have art works technically examined for authentication, information and conservation. X-rays show art restorers where painters altered their work and permit chemical analysis of magnified specks of pigment. Aviva Burnstock leads the scientific department for conservation of easel paintings at the Courtauld Institute. UCL Painting Analysis is an authentication company based at University College, London, England and the Oxford University Research Laboratory tests archaeology and art objects.

A question of attribution
Article Abstract:
Several drawings attributed to Rembrandt have been reattributed by Martin Royalton-Kisch, assistant keeper of Dutch and Flemish prints and drawings at the British Museum. Diversity of style and lack of signatures hinder expert studies. Royalton-Kisch collated a reliable core group of 70 clearly attributed drawings and used an orderly scholarship system. He believes pupils' drawings corrected by the master can be identified.
