Robert Bruce

Diplomat and Oriental scholar Robert Bruce gained a first class honours degree in History and Economics at Aberdeen University, Scotland, in 1933. He was taken on by the Colonial Service, and trained at Wadham College, Oxford, England. He was posted to Malaya, and then obtained a two-year appointment in Canton to study Cantonese and to inspect Chinese schools. He began to lose his sight before he was 30, and was discharged from the Diplomatic Service in 1938. He undertook censorship work during the second world war, and was the British Council's representative in Bangkok, Thailand, from 1955 to 1963.

Sir Nick Larmour

Nick Larmour was a diplomat who was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1916 and then studied in Dublin, Ireland. He was straightforward and unassuming, and enjoyed the customs of other people and their company, qualities that helped him in his role as a diplomat. He was posted in a wide range of countries, including New Zealand, Nigeria, Haiti, Australia and Singapore. He despised hypocrisy and arrogant behavior and supported his staff, though he was critical of shody work.
