Roger Loewig
Article Abstract:
Painter and poet Roger Loewig left his native Germany in 1945, at the age of 14, as the Poles expelled the German population. He worked in the Soviet Zone until 1951, and in 1953 was appointed teacher of Russian, German and history in a secondary school in East Berlin, Germany. He had a strong sense of guilt as a German, and this is clearly reflected in his work. He was not acceptable to the East German authorities, and was dismissed as a teacher. He was allowed to settle in West Berlin in Jan 1972.
