Rolf Liebermann
Article Abstract:
Composer and administrator Rolf Liebermann studied law at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, and music at the Jose Berr Conservatory. He subsequently studied composition in Vienna, Austria, and Budapest, Hungary. He returned to Switzerland in 1938 to become a music critic, and also studied serial 12-tone technique with Wladmir Vogel. He was a producer for Swiss radio between 1945 and 1950 and for the Beromunster Radio Orchestra until 1957. He took on the Hamburg Opera in 1957, and took over the Paris Opera in 1973.

Nathalie Sarraute

Novelist and playwright Nathalie Sarraute was born in Ivanovo, Russia. She graduated in law in Paris, France, in 1920, and then studied English at Oxford, England, and sociology in Berlin, Germany. Her literary career began in 1929 with the publication of 'Tropismes,' a small volume of literary sketches. Her first novel, 'Portrait d'un inconnu,' was published in 1948. She also wrote radio plays and won the International Publishers' Prize.

The American mouth organist Larry Adler died on Aug 6 2001 aged 87. Widely considered the greatest performer on the harmonica, he played an eclectic mixture of jazz, classical and pop music.
