Roy Shipperbottom

Article Abstract:

Roy Shipperbottom was a teacher and food historian who had a particular interest in an 18th century author specialising in food called Elizabeth Raffald. Shipperbottom was born in 1930 and intially worked in the construction industry with his father, He later studied to be a teacher and moved into further education. He produced text books and selected course books, but his teaching career was ended by illness. He also carried out research for TV programs and gave papers on the history of food at conferences.

William E. Fredeman

Article Abstract:

William E. Fredeman was a scholar who studied the pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and collected Victoriana. He was born in Arkansas in 1928, and his mother died in a car accident, so he was sent to an orphanage. he was adopted by Lucille Fredeman who later separated from her husband. He enlisted in the navy and went to the Philippines. On his return he studied at Hendrix College, and then at Oklahoma University, where he took his MA and PhD. He then worked at the University of British Colombia, Canada.

Marie-Madeleine Gauthier

Article Abstract:

Marie-Madeleine Gauthier was an art historian specialising in enamels from the medieval period. She studied in Bordeaux, France, and then worked at a library where she became interested in enamels. Her work 'Emaux du moyen age occidental' is still seen as the most authoritative work dealing with the subject, and was published in 1972. She combined curiosity, erudition and enthusiasm. She received a number of honors, including being made a member of Princeton's Instituteof Advanced Study.
