Science, world?
Article Abstract:
The Science World multimedia science centre which will open in Bristol, England, at Easter 2000 will use broadcasting and interactive media to create a hands-on science centre which will be the first of many, according to Martin Freeth, the centre's director. It will be based around interactivity, recognizing that making choices is a very powerful educational tool. New media will play a particularly important role in present concepts which cannot be conveyed with a conventional hands-on exhibit.

Talking pictures come to the small screen

Graphical user interface (GUI) systems, with on-screen menus and the use of a mouse, replace keyboard commands on computers. Some of Britain's 1 million visually handicapped work with computers. To use GUIs they need new technological solutions such as speech synthesisers to describe the on-screen graphics. These can be plugged into the computer or fixed inside on an expansion card. Research is also developing multimedia interfaces and tactile screen systems.
