Russia's Lone Ranger
Article Abstract:
Relations between Russian president Boris Yeltsin and Alexander Lebed, national security adviser and secretary of the security council, seem to be becoming increasingly strained. Many observers feel that Lebed was only appointed because Yeltsin wanted to gain the 10.7 million votes which Lebed achieved in the first round of the presidential election. Yeltsin now seems to be rejecting Lebed, and has failed to acknowledge Lebed's efforts to reach a peace settlement in Chechnya.

Lebed plots to conquer the Kremlin
Article Abstract:
Alexander Lebed, who has recently been dismissed by president Boris Yeltsin from the Russian government, remains determined to make his mark on Russian politics, and even hopes to become the country's next leader. He had aimed to do this from within the government, but will now be in open opposition to it. He is forging an alliance with General Alexander Korzhakov, former chief bodyguard of Boris Yeltsin, who is regarded as an extremely shadowy figure in Russian politics.

Old bruiser set to give Yeltsin a bloody nose
Article Abstract:
General Alexander Leded's Congress of Russian Communities party performed very badly in the Russian parliamentary elections in Dec 1995, and this served to damage his public image. However, he is still determined to establish a strong position on the Russian political scene. He has put himself forward as a presidential candidate, and will probably be part of the 'Third Force' coalition, which aims to attract voters who are opposed to Boris Yeltsin and to the Communists.
