Russia's intellectuals come out of the big sleep
Article Abstract:
The Russian intelligentsia grew as secondary and higher education expanded from the 1960s to the late 1980s. The intelligentsia had a political role, though it was repressed, both under communism and in the early years of the transition. This has changed in the 1990s for a number of reasons. The media is less interested in the opinions of the intelligentsia, and the lack of crude repression has undermined their role. The Congress chair, Sergei Filatov, aims to revive the intelligentsia to monitor the government, but there is scepticism about the idea.

The endless burial of Lenin
Article Abstract:
The Russian Communist party appeared to have undergone a revival in 1995, but is likely to perform porly in elections in Dec 1999. The party's rivals benefit from access to money, regional bosses and the media. The Russian elite is characterized by self-interest, and the 147 million ordinary Russians have been forgotten. Views on human rights, race, and women are still backward in Russia, and there is little evidence of a common cause from which to develop social ethics and purposefulness.

Enter Grandfather Frost, a skinny Santa with slim pickings for children
Article Abstract:
Many ordinary Russians cannot afford to buy many Christmas presents for their children, even though toys and games are now widely available, at least in Moscow, Russia. Children have modest expectations, and are taught at an early age not to question their discipline of their parents. They often live in cramped conditions, and are put under considerable pressure to perform well in all areas of life. However, they consider themselves to lead a happy life.
