Russia's old hand at the helm
Article Abstract:
Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin clearly has considerable influence over the fate of President Boris Yeltsin and over the future of the country's economic reform programme. He has a firm belief that he is skilled at market economics, having been head of Gazprom, the natural gas industry. However, he has little experience of the practical details of capitalism. Many Western analysts who favour the free market have serious reservations about Chernomyrdin's revival, but cannot put forward a politically viable alternative.

Boris, the Kremlin's kingmaker
Article Abstract:
New Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov has widespread support, and is therefore in a strong position to address Russia's problems, according to Russian multi-billionaire Boris Berezovsky. However, he does not believe that Primakov and his cabinet have a clear idea of how to move forward. He feels that attention should now focus on preventing Russia collapsing totally, with reforms only following once this has been achieved. He believes that Russian President Boris Yeltsin should resign if he cannot be a powerful force.
