Safeway may be heading for the checkout
Article Abstract:
There are rumours in financial circles in the UK that supermarket chain Safeway is facing an uncertain future. Safeway is the smallest and most vulnerable of the leading four supermarket chains in the UK, and is attracting interest from larger chains as they seek to expand in a mature market. This problem has been made worse by basic mistakes at Safeway in supply and systems. Safeway remains financially strong, but financial experts believe that it faces a future of long, slow decline.

He became joint general manager of the company, with his brother, in 1938. He later became chairman, and retired from this post in 1967. He was a philanthropist as well as a businessman, helping a variety of charities.
