Sainsbury swaps food for politics
Article Abstract:
The Sainsbury family will give up control of the Sainsbury's supermarket business as a result of the decision by Lord Sainsbury of Turville to become a working peer. The family, which controls 40% of the shares, will remain committed shareholders. The decision has been greeted with surprise by City analysts, who had not expected Lord Sainsbury to step down for some years. However, it is also believed that the move will have a positive impact on Sainsbury's, where family involvement has been seen as restricting corporate strategy.

Sainsbury's goes back to basics with its local shops
Article Abstract:
Supermarket chain Sainsbury's hopes that its plans to open 200 branches of Sainsbury's Local in the period to 2002 will allow it to reverse its loss of market share to Tesco. Sales at three pilot Sainsbury's Local stores have been much higher than anticipated. The new stores will be only 3,000 sq ft, and will sell basic items such as tea, bread and milk. Some observers feel that Sainsbury's is making a very big move on the basis of only a small trial.
